Rio Ferdinand has signed a new one-year contract at Manchester United. The centre-back, who was out of contract in the summer, has made 432 appearances since his United debut in 2002 and won his sixth Premier League medal with the club this season.

Incoming United manager David Moyes told the club's official website that it is "clear for everyone to see that Rio has had one of his best seasons with the club and I think even from the outside you can see what a big character Rio is around the dressing room, so I am delighted he has signed a new contract and I am looking forward to working with him."

Uefa to use biological passports as part of anti-doping scheme

Uefa is set to award a place in the Champions League to the winners of the Europa League from the 2014-15 season, in order to make that competition more attractive, with an announcement expected on Friday.

Other plans under consideration include whether to award a fifth Champions League place to clubs in the big European leagues and to expand the number of Europa League places on offer.

A goal by David Lawson with just over two minutes remaining lifted Duke to a 12-11 win over Notre Dame. Denver beat North Carolina by a similar count, rallying from an early 6-0 deficit. Syracuse scored three goals in the final three minutes to get by Yale, 7-6.

Syracuse veteran head coach John Desko summed up another victory in May, any win this time of year is a great win.
