Baby Lion Watercolor Painting

Baby Lion watercolor painting (9 X 12) inspired by my four year old grand daughter Olivia's imagination. She loves the Lion King story and has her little group of stuffed animals she carries around: Symba, Kayla, and toy lions of every kind, sometimes a parrot and a "dragon", which is actually a dinosaur. She's tried to reenact the Lion King with my dog Buddy, but he doesn't understand the game. One day when I picked her up at child care at the Y she had a live 'pride' of lions with her and when I asked one of little girls if she was a lion she responded with a roar. They then crawled as we walked to the door to say goodbye to their fellow lion.

Along with Vermeer's masterpiece, 34 other 17th-century works will be on view including a still life from the extraordinary Rachel Ruysch, an ahead-of-her-time woman known for lush, textural botanicals, who served as court painter to Johann Wilhelm of Bavaria and enjoyed commercial success throughout her life.

I love dreams, especially meaningful ones, and this is that kind of dream. All of you know Andrea of Hula Seventy (my blog friend since like forever, past contributor, amazing photographer, wordsmith, colour capturer, dancer, and most of all amazing mother); well she has been asked to speak at a Ted Youth conference in Paris this summer, and her daughter Ava (budding photographer - see photo's above) is going also! I thought the Buddha with the curly hair* was a nice match with this little poodle figurine I sculpted years ago to be part of a chess set, with dogs on one side and cats on the other. The poodle with her little pink handbag and manicured nails is the last remaining piece (of the six I made before losing interest in the project). She she sits on my altar beside Buddha and a little plastic lamb I found in the street.

Maybe someday Ill return to the chess set project, though I dont really need one since I dont play.

The pencil I drew is actually a chunky wooden lead holder. I like it more for its aesthetic value than as a pencil.

This is the second painting slated for my summer show at Tree's Place Gallery. As I mentioned before, this will be the first time Karen and I have shared the spotlight since 2007, and we're both really looking forward to it. As always, I'm behind, and producing a shows worth of paintings plus getting new work to my other galleries as well means a busy spring and summer. Howard Rehs at Rehs Galleries, Inc. has requested a pool bowl and I'll be starting that today. Haven't done one of those in a long time. It'll be a relatively large painting, so I'll probably post some in progress shots along the way.

I repainted a couple of portraits I had done our first year here - over 9 years ago. We had just brought home our first three sheep - Daisy, Rosemary and Joe Pye Weed the ram. It seems like a lifetime ago now, but at times, it's like I blinked my eyes and a decade is gone. I know this decade has been so jammed pack with wonderful things, hard times too - but always the inner knowledge that I'm living the life I am meant to live, with the person I am meant to be with. This knowledge brings one a lot of strength in sad times - I don't take it lightly, as there were years where I didn't have that inner strength and was struggling to get on my path.
