Bearing compassion in mind

[Source - Bodhi Tree Swaying - Random Thoughts of a Western Buddhist]

Id like to suggest a simple practice for you.

For the next hour or so, let the first thought you have when seeing someone or meeting them face-to-face be: This person suffers just as I suffer. This person, just like me, doesnt want to suffer.

Seeing someone can include seeing their photograph or seeing them on TV, as well as seeing them in person, or seeing them passing by.

You can try this for a longer period, of course, but I thought it would be good to try it for a very short spell initially, so that you dont feel youre taking on a task thats too big.

Id advise keeping these two phrases going prophylactically, so to speak; if you just have them running around your head whenever your mind would otherwise go off wandering, then itll be easier to call them to mind.

So as youre driving,... [View Full Article]

There are, rather, only opportunities that the mind evaluates. If we can short-circuit this addiction to evaluation we can begin to approach the way we meet the world differently. Shifting from a position where life is filled with problematic situations into a place where we find our lives filled with situations that in all cases offer us opportunities for evolution.

The talk takes place at Green Gulch Farm Zen Center and he dealves into such concepts as No Mind, contemporary linguistics, awareness not being the same as thought and poor zendo etiquette.

[Source - Mystery of Existence]

I mentioned holding satsang with parts of me to a friend familiar with the Big Mind process, and it reminded me of some of the slight differences between the two.

When I hold satsang with parts of me, its with whats already alive here, for instance fear, frustration, pain, joy and so on. And its largely nonverbal (felt, visual). In contrast, the Big Mind process is often done with whats not immediately alive here and possibly more abstract, and it emphasizes the verbal more.

In a way, its the difference between an approach thats more masculine (the Big Mind process) and one thats more feminine (holding satsang).

No wonder I am drawn to the more feminine approach right now. The one thats more nonverbal and felt.

It relates more to the belly center, and itl="tag"" title="satsang" rel="tag""... [View Full Article]

There is a disposition in the West to direct our spiritual efforts towards solitary practiceeg. a daily meditation on the cushionplacing less emphasis on the role that interactive, human connections play in spiritual growth. While mindfulness developed in isolation can result in great breakthroughs, it certainly makes for a withdrawn and difficult journey. For we are inherently social creaturesthe size, structure and impressive functional capabilities of the human brain were developed specifically to allow for interaction, support and learning from others. To guide ones spiritual endeavors away from awakening amidst human contact is to limit its possibilities growth and joy.

Over decades of spiritual practice it becomes clear that some of the most... [View Full Article]

Love behind denial

[Source - Mystery of Existence]

Denial is one of those things that (a) may not be quite what it looks like and (b) has an undeservedly bad reputation.

What is denial really? Any belief includes a form of denial. As soon as an image or thought is held as true, there is a denial of (i) the validity of its reversals, (ii) the limited validity of the initial image or thought, and (iii) what reality really is, which is quite different from what any thought can point to (alth0ugh it could be said to be awakeness, presence, God).

Denial is inherent in any belief, in mind identifying with any image or thought, and it comes from an innocent with to protect this me, the image of a me as a human self in the world. It comes from love for this image of a me.
